David Hesidence, Addictions Counsellor, RP

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I fell in love with Canada, its people and values many years ago and chose to make it my home.  I recently became a proud Canadian citizen.

I have much experience in counseling individuals with substance use and other co-existing mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, ADHD etc.  It is with honor that I contribute to Dr. Sogge’s practice as an addictions counselor, working under her supervision for several years now. Like my associates in this practice, I firmly believe in a client-centered approach to counseling, meeting those I work with where they are, treating them as equals, with dignity and a focus on tapping into inner strengths.  It is my belief that addiction is a treatable brain disease with social and psychological components. As such, I do not look at those with substance use or other mental disorders as inherently defective, lacking willpower or less than anyone else.

In recovery myself – with over 25 years of continuous sobriety, I recognize that there are many ways to recovery and that the path I personally took is only one of many.  My approach to counseling includes motivational enhancement, cognitive behavioral therapy and other evidence-based approaches.  I also believe in providing the client with the latest information on the nature of substance use and other issues so they can understand not only the how and the what, but also the why of recovery.

I am a member of the Canadian Addictions Counseling Certification Federation and have done Masters level work in Psychological Counseling at Argosy University in Virginia.  I hold an addictions certificate in the Trauma and Addictions Recovery Studies program from Algonquin College and have also worked as a professor teaching new addictions counselors entering the field.

As a certified Project Management Professional, I am currently working as a manager of strategic projects at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Prior to entering the mental health and addictions field, I had successful career as an executive in the high-tech industry with significant international business experience and exposure to many cultures.  While I very much enjoyed my high-tech career, I never felt as personally fulfilled there, as I do now, helping people into and through recovery.

I have been privileged to witness many individuals whose lives were once crushed by substance abuse and other disorders turn themselves around to lead happy, fulfilled lives.  I know from experience that the journey, while not always easy, is so very much worth the price of admission.  Perhaps you would like to consider starting yours today?
