My approach
My role
Promoting your optimal health and performance through outstanding psychological work is my passion. I offer evidence based assessment and diagnosis of psychological blocks to a life of vitality. I offer compassionate, confidential, professional psychotherapy for working through roadblocks to change. I may offer gentle interpersonal challenge to entrenched self-limiting patterns. I coach individuals and groups on effective skills for increased individuation, enhanced leadership and performance, improved quality of life, and profound personal and professional growth.
Why see a psychologist?
Perhaps you have a clear idea of where you would like to be in your life or your performance, but have felt blocked in getting to this place; perhaps anxiety, fear, trauma, or old patterns of thinking, feeling or behaving have blocked you from achieving your goals. Psychological work with a skilled registered psychologist trained in the science and art of change allows you a safe, supportive, confidential environment in which to overcome old roadblocks to new patterns of thinking, feeling, or behaving. Work with me is intended to move you to lasting change, and to a way of being that frees you to take action on your values and goals.
I provide receipts that you may use for reimbursement of services from your health insurance plan. Most insurance companies recognize and reimburse psychological services delivered by a registered psychologist without a referral from a physician. Psychological services, although shown in research to be directly related to improved health outcomes and lower health costs, are not presently covered by OHIP.
What to expect
When you work with me, we will first explore your initial concerns and build our working alliance. If necessary we may complete psychological testing to gather more information and gain a clearer picture of your strengths and challenges from a psychological perspective. When we have a clear psychological perspective on your concerns, we work together to set your goals based on your values.
In psychotherapy you have a place in which to experiment with new ways of being, within the compassionate and confidential laboratory of our therapeutic alliance. As you experience new ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, I draw from Third Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness approaches to support your changes and to tailor psychotherapy to your goals as an individual.
Interventions
Research in psychotherapy has shown Third Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (which currently encompasses Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and other mindfulness based approaches such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)) to be effective in shifting patterns related to depression relapse, PTSD, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, stress and burnout, and a variety of other presenting issues. I have found these evidence-supported approaches, used in the context of a very strong therapeutic alliance, to be effective in enhancing change with clients struggling to regain their lives from pain, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, and depression. Using principles from these approaches, I have witnessed many of my clients move out of what they had once felt were insurmountable situations, toward lasting transformation, more vitality, enhanced relationships, and improved performance in work, play, and life.
