I am pleased to be able to offer clinical health, & performance psychology services to adolescents and adults in my private practice office in downtown Ottawa.
I am a psychologist with a special interest in skillful, evidence-based strategies for optimizing the performance of the body and the mind. I have a passion for empowering individuals, couples, and families to discover and move forward on their unique life vision. I am committed to serving the value of each individual’s right to finding their optimal potential.
My work with you comes from a place of deep integrity; I have had my own struggles with anxiety, stress, and perfectionism and in addition to my professional training know first hand what it is like to work hard to achieve life goals. I have experienced first hand that finding clarity on one’s life values helps in working through enormous pain and in dropping habits that increase suffering or impede committed action on our unique values and goals.
Training
I hold a doctorate from the American Psychological Association accredited program in psychology at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. In my doctoral studies I worked extensively developing research projects in the Texas A&M College of Medicine’s Family Medicine department, where I studied how personal history and emotional factors affected student physicians’ clinical reasoning and interactions with their patients. In my clinical work I completed clinical rotations in psychotherapy, neuropsychology, clinical health psychology, student health services, hypnosis, post traumatic stress treatment with veterans, women’s health, military sexual assault, and mindfulness based interventions for stress-based physical symptoms such as headaches, IBS, pain, and sleep problems. My doctoral residency was in the cutting edge Primary Care/Behavioral Health track at the University of Texas at Austin’s University Health Center in Austin, Texas.
I have had the great privilege to pursue ongoing professional training in what is considered to be the “third wave” of the cognitive behavioral stream of psychological interventions. This “third wave” emphasizes the science and art of mindfulness as a base to shifting entrenched patterns of thought, emotions, physical sensations, and behavior. I have engaged in extended training with teachers such as Jon Kabat Zinn, Saki Santorelli, Zindel Segal, Stephen Hayes, Kelly Wilson, Russ Harris, the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, Christine Padesky, Daniel Siegel, Sara Lazar, Sharon Salzberg and others who teach cutting edge approaches to the integration of mindful awareness and training of stability in the mind with traditional evidence-based psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
Experience
Most recently I have served ad the Chief of Psychology Professional Practice at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. In this role I was responsible for promoting excellence in professional practice and research in a large multi-clinic mental health organization. When I teach about emotionally intelligence leadership, and when I coach executives and other high performers, my professional skills as a psychologist are informed by first hand experience as a senior leader in my profession.
I have been privileged to work as a psychologist in the Musculoskeletal Clinic at the New Alberta Children’s Hospital, as faculty in Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the Texas A&M College of Medicine, and as a Program Director in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health in New England. Prior to relocating to Ottawa, I was the consulting psychologist for the Eating Disorder Programs at the Women’s Health Clinic and the Family and Youth Clinic at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
I enjoy teaching and training the next generation of psychologists. I currently provide mentorship and clinical supervision to doctoral students as a clinical faculty member at the Centre for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa. I have provided clinical teaching and supervision to doctoral students, and I have taught Cognitive and Advanced Abnormal Psychology as an adjunct faculty member in the Psychology Department at Trent University. I have also taught Intellectual and Behavioral Assessment as an instructor at the University of Lethbridge and University of Calgary.
I believe that learning is lifelong. When we meet you can be assured that your psychologist is actively involved with the latest developments in psychology, including innovations in Jon Kabat Zinn’s mindfulness-based stress reduction curriculum, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and continuing education in sport and performance psychology.
